Can I learn tai chi without learning martial art?
Tai Chi is a Martial Art. The practice of the martial arts brings forward the health benefits that are admired in tai chi practice. Anyone can begin training as long as they have an interest to learn the curriculum and methods that come with it. PLTCG emphasizes conditioning, endurance, explosiveness, speed, control, and reaction. We gear all of our training exercises towards developing these attributes and exploring the techniques and principles of the art. All members must fill out a waiver that includes PAR-Q questions before beginning. Consult your doctor if you have any concerns about beginning as the physical activity from training could become strenuous. Doctors often recommend Tai Chi so do check with your doctor if you have any medical concerns.
Do I need to be familiar with tai Chi or Martial Arts before starting?
Not at all! Several of our long time practitioners and instructors had little to no martial arts experience beforehand. All we would expect out of practitioners is the ability to listen and train diligently.
Is It only for the elderly ?
No, The misconception of tai Chi is that you have to be of older age to start. Magic lies in starting now and practicing until you cannot, well into older age. Currently our minimum acceptance age is 8 for our group classes which mix young and older members together. Any parent or guardian who is interested in private lessons for their child under 15 must be present at all times during the training session and is encouraged to participate so the child can practice at home.
What does a class normally look like?
Our fundamentals classes, groups or private, last 50 minutes during which we bow in, followed by mobility warmups, and exercises to strength and activate muscle groups to be used during the heavier phase of training. Form sequence, drills in the air, and partner drills could all be included. We conclude each class with a cool down that could include stationary postures and meditation.
Do you work with weapons?
We focus primarily on empty hands, as this is the method emphasized in tai chi. Elements of boxing, and other unarmed striking techniques are incorporated as well, with the instruction of improving body movement, athletic performance, and understanding of the art. How can Americans do authentic Chinese arts?
Tai Chi is a Martial Art. The practice of the martial arts bridges cultures and communities. The Chinese arts have proven to be time-honored effective and suitable for everyone. The GGMs of our system were Chinese, Taiwanese, and Hawaiian and passed on many of the cultural practices associated with Chinese Boxing systems to Americans. Today, many of our active members and 4th generation lineage holders help ensure that we represent and preserve Tai Chi as a cultural gem for all while staying true to its Chinese origins.
Will I be part of a community?
